Involving Patients in Nurse’s Shift Changes Reduces Medical Errors, Satisfies Patients

November 20, 2013 — One of the biggest frustrations for hospital patients is shift changes. Along with transferring care, the nurses are also transferring accountability, and as a result, they must immediately make rounds to acknowledge their patients, build trust, and prioritize care.

A recent article posted in Science Daily shows that a process called bedside handover, transferring patient care at the bedside, may be a possible solution that can reduce errors and satisfy patients by making them feel like they are actively participating in their own care. It’s a win-win situation because bedside handover is also much more efficient for the incoming and outgoing nursing staff.
